Release Notes for Update Center 2.2, 2.2 Update 1, and 2.2 Update 2

This document provides release information for the 2.2, 2.2 Update 1, and 2.2 Update 2 releases of Update Center.

Platforms Not Formally or Fully Tested

The following platforms have been tried successfully, but are not formally or fully tested. If you try one of them, please let us know how it goes.

Windows 7	Update Center is known to be incompatible with Windows 7 due to changes in the User Access Control security model in Windows 7 as compared to Windows Vista. This incompatibility is noted in Issue 1583.

Packages in This Release

The following table shows the packages that make up Update Center 2.2, 2.2 Update 1, and 2.2 Update 2.

Note that all the packages in the 2.2 Update 2 release have the same value, 30.2311, for the "branch" portion of their package versions. Similarly, all the packages in the 2.2 Update 1 and 2.2 releases have the values 30.2210 and 30.2164, respectively, for their branch portions. You can use these branch values to identify an Update Center package as a member of the 2.2 Update 2, 2.2 Update 1, or 2.2 release.

pkg(5) Version in This Release

The version of pkg(5) in Update Center 2.2 is based on the version in build 111 of OpenSolaris, with the addition of features and bugs fixes unique to Update Center.

New Features and Enhancements in the 2.2 Release

New Package in 2.2

A new package, pkg-toolkit-incorporation, has been added to Update Center in the 2.2 release. This package must be included in a distribution's repository for Update Center 2.2. to function correctly.

New Version of pkg(5)

Update Center 2.2 includes a new version of pkg(5). This new version requires the following change in operating a repository:

When upgrading a repository to the new version pkg(5), the index must be rebuilt because the format of the index files has changed. To do this:

1. Remove the $REPO/index directory.
2. Run the command pkg.depotd --refresh-index.
3. Start pkg.depotd normally.

Known Issues and Workarounds in the 2.2 Release

Featured Software cannot be disabled through the user interface (Issue 1348)

"OK" button label not translated in ja locale (Issue 519)

On Windows Vista, the desktop notifier is blocked from running as a startup program (Issue 721)

On Windows Vista, command line tools require "Run as Administrator" privilege in certain cases (Issue 721)

On UNIX systems, shell syntax errors appear when launching updatetool (Issue 582)

On Mac OS X 10.4, the Update Tool application may fail to start (Issue 687)

On Mac OS X, running sudo updatetool does not grant the Update Tool root privileges (Issue 768)

On Mac OS X, trying to stop the notifier hangs the terminal window (Issue 961)

On Solaris 10, running updatetool on the command line produces "CRITICAL" python GTK messages (Issue 709)

On OpenSolaris 2008.11, text in online help appears to overlap (Issue 933)

On 64-bit Ubuntu 8.10, running updatetool produces several "Gtk-Message: Failed to load module" errors (Issue 893)

pkg handles unknown locale with poor error message (Issue 983)

Changes in the 2.2 Update 1 Release

The 2.2 Update 1 release is a maintenance update to the 2.2 release. It provides fixes for the following issues:
