Update Center 2.0 Themes

At the heart of the design of Update Center 2.0 are three high level themes:

Ease of Use Users should find that it is easy to locate, install and back-out packages in the repository using Update Center 2.0
Connecting With Users Development teams should find that it is easy to connect and communicate with their development community
Ecosystem Development teams should find that it is easy to leverage other communities to expand the reach to the user community to create an Ecosystem for their products

Under each theme will be specific requirements that enable the higher level theme.

Themes -> Ease Of Use

  • Remove the barriers to entry and make it easy for developers to "try out/evaluate" our technologies.
  • Simplify delivery and awareness of updates for open source and commercial product teams.
  • Offer straightforward transition to companion commercial product distros (when desirable).

  • Ease manner by which 3rd party projects and commercial organizations contribute binary packages to application distros.
  • Deliver solution for open source projects and commercial product teams to deliver and maintain binary distributions of multi-OS platform applications.
    • Well-defined scope of an application including its version and initial set of interoperable binary packages.
Themes -> Connecting With the Community

Connecting With The Community

  • Provide common infrastructures for product teams to develop and share common components
    • Use value of easy access to new and updated packages to compel users to register with the community or commercial organization delivering the application distro.
    • Enable product development teams to connect with their developers
      • Provide users with useful and relevant information concerning popular packages, applications, community news and commercial services and product offerings.
      • Provide usage information to communities, 3rd party contributors and commercial product teams to help improve future versions of the applications.

Themes -> Ecosystem

Ecosystem

  • Make it easy to create a repository-based environment that allows hosting of applications/add-ons.
  • Ease manner by which 3rd party projects and commercial organizations contribute binary packages to application distros.
  • Leverage other strong communities and use them for overall growth by connecting them.
